EDUCATION INITIATIVES

Expanding the possibilities through learning.
Education is a major focus of our community outreach. Some 50 percent of our contributions and activities are geared toward strengthening students' capabilities in math and science.

To help address these challenges, we provide funding to education programs that are focused on math, science, information technology and engineering. In addition, we reach out to organizations and teachers dedicated to improving the quality of education and to enhancing academic performance in math, science, engineering and technology. Among the several corporate-wide focus programs we support are these:

  • The Space Day Education Initiative - a year-round program founded by Lockheed Martin that excites children about math, science, engineering and technology through hands-on activities and interaction with astronauts and other aerospace professionals.
  • MATHCOUNTS® - a national competition that focuses on math enrichment, coaching and competition to promote middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. From 2006-2008, Lockheed Martin will sponsor the MATHCOUNTS® final competition.
  • K-12 Mentoring - a formal mentoring program in which Lockheed Martin employees nationwide engage students in structured and meaningful mentoring relationships. More than 4,000 students benefit annually, and the program continues to grow.
  • National Engineers Week - a nationwide effort that reaches thousands of schools, businesses and community groups, promoting the importance of an engineering education and motivating youth to consider careers in the field.

Educational Programs in Local Communities.
Across the Corporation, Lockheed Martin participates in a wide variety of local education initiatives. Beneficiaries range in age from K-12 students, to college-age students and to teachers. For example:

  • Lockheed Martin in Dallas, TX, participates in the "In Unity Tutoring Program," which provides math and science tutoring to at-risk second-and third-grade students at an inner-city school.
  • Lockheed Martin in Houston, TX, operates a program called "Getting Students Excited About Math and Science," in which employees talk to students in the classroom.
  • Lockheed Martin in Owego, NY, sponsors Engineering Shadowing, in which 150 high school sophomores and juniors spend a day with Lockheed Martin engineers. The students keep in touch with the engineers throughout their high school careers.
  • Lockheed Martin in Palmdale, CA, hosts collegiate student teams from the United States and foreign countries in a heavy-lift, radio-control airplane competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
  • The Lockheed Martin/University of Central Florida Academy for Mathematics and Science in central Florida is an education/industry/community partnership aimed at improving math, science and technology education in the area.
